Salut vieille branche,

Alors tu vas entrer au panthéon des valeurs refuges du grand Nord,

on va te collectionner pour blanchir de l'argent sale maffieux et pour

dissimuler sa fortune au fisc... T'es devenu PRÉCIEUX !! Pense à

tout négocier à partir de maintenant...
ne laisse plus rien de gratuit... fait des dollars avec tout !!

Je vais garder tous tes e-mails et tes photos, je pourrai peut-être
les revendre un jour quand toutes tes oeuvres auront été vendues
et que tout ce qui te concerne deviendra rare et "collector"...
"Tendance" comme on dit dans notre capitale si inteligente
(poil au ventre...)... Porte une burka pour qu'on ne puisse te
regarder sans payer, ne parle devant quelqu'un que s'il a payé
pour entendre ta parole... ne laisse aucune trace de toi nul part...
sois une rareté qui se mérite, ne cèdes pas aux implorations
ni aux prières, sois EDOUARD SUPER STAR !! le gars qui
réduit tout à cône 10 juste d'un regard !! le gars qui oxyde
tout ce qu'il touche et vitrifie les filles d'un sourire en profondeur...

Juste pour te dire que j'ai été heureux de rencontrer et d'accompagner

pendant toutes ces années une célébrité du Québec irréductiblement

collectionable et peu fréquentable à souhaits...
Regardes bien derrière toi et vois tout le chemin parcourru depuis que

tu terrorisais le village avec ta gang quand tu avais 9 ans... Aujourd'hui

tu es mondialement connu et reconnu dans toute la sphère des Art du

Feu, une reconnaissance bien méritée qui est un juste retour pour la

part de ta vie consacrée à suivre le chemin monastique et délirant de la

connaissance céramique (poil au zigomatique !).

Exposition 1971 Exhibition

La poterie étant une des formes d’art les plus anciennes,
il est assez difficile d’être original dans la conception des

formes; c’est ce qui amène Edouard Bastarache à s’attarder
d’avantage à l’équilibre de la forme par l’émaillage :

C’est le jeu de la forme et de la couleur qui donne un

produit esthétiquement valable.

Toutes les pièces de céramique exposées sont

essentiellement décoratives. Il a horreur de faire des

pièces utilitaires parce qu’il n’aime pas se répéter.

Cette façon de travailler la céramique est synonyme
d’artisanat, pour lui bien qu’il ne soit pas contre

cette discipline en soi.

Il disait : "Si j’étais peintre, je ne ferais pas de

portrait puisque la photographie existe; aussi, je ne

fais pas de pièces utilitaires puisqu’on les fabrique

en série dans des ateliers bien organisés et à beaucoup

moins cher."

Edouard Bastarache arrive avec difficulté à parler de sa

technique de travail puisqu’elle varie d’une pièce à

l’autre ; quant à la forme de ses pièces, on peut leur trouver

un point en commun : le goulot.

Il attache une très grande importance à la façon

d’appliquer ses glaçures : C’est par la glaçure qu’on

souligne l’équilibre d’une pièce, c’est pour cette

raison que j’emploie surtout celle dont la couleur

se rapproche le plus de celle de la terre. Je détermine

la couleur par l’épaisseur de la glaçure et comme

je peux obtenir quatre ou cinq couleurs avec une

même glaçure, j’en utilise seulement trois.

Ma façon de m’exprimer en poterie c’est d’expéri-

menter à fond une glaçure ; il faut lui laisser le soin

d’épouser la forme de la pièce et par conséquent se

servir du mouvement du tour pour la décorer.

Pottery being one of the oldest forms of art, it is rather

difficult to be original in the design of shapes; which

leads Edouard Bastarache to spend more time to the balance

of the form by glazing. It is the play of the form and the

color that gives an aesthetically valid product.

All of the exhibited ceramic pieces are primarily decorative.

He has horror to make utilitarian wares because he does

not like to repeat himself. This way (repetitive) of working

in ceramics is synonymous with the craft industry, for him
although he is not against this discipline by itself.

He said: "If I were a painter, I would not make portraits since

photography is here; also, I do not make utilitarian wares

since one manufactures them in series in well organized
workshops at cheaper prices."

Edouard Bastarache has difficulty speaking about his

technique of working since it varies from piece to piece;

as for the shape of his pots, one can find a common

denominator: the neck.

He gives very great importance to the way of applying his

glazes: it is by the glaze that the balance of a pot is

underlined, for this reason he especially uses those whose

color are closer to the clay. He determines the color by the

thickness of the glazes and since he can obtain four or five

colors from the same glaze, he uses only three glazes.

My way of expressing myself in pottery is to experiment a

glaze thoroughly; it is necessary to allow it to spouse the

shape of the pot and consequently to make use of the

movement of the wheel.

Fooling around with clay and glazes

This title looks a lot like the titles of a few famous
ceramics books.
I do not want to sound pretentious but it describes
very well my journey in the world of ceramics,
which seems never-ending.
When I was very young, I did everything to avoid
arts lessons but one day at the age of 25, while
doing medical post-graduate studies, I was convinced
by a fellow student to take up a ceramics course at
the « La Boutique d’Argile» ( The Clay Shop ) in
Quebec City. He told me it was a way to help
financially Brother Julien Cloutier who was starting
his ceramics school at that time, and an unexpensive
one to take some time off (1968).
I was hooked instantly and have always been since.
Not having to sell pots to earn my living I am more
interested in making decorative works than utilitarian
wares.
Having been involved in medical research for quite
many years, I have been conditioned by it and have
spent much time in testing clays and glazes.
Hence the title of my statement.
I use waste materials from steel plants located in
our area to color many of my glazes and clays.
I fire most of my work to cone 9 1/2 in reduction
in a 60 cubic foot downdraft gas kiln.
I have also published a book «Substitutions For
Raw Ceramics Materials» in 8 languages,
and a new one “Toxicology Ceramics Glass and
Metallurgy” in both our official languages here in
Canada

Maybe the title of my next book will be «Fooling
Around With Clay and Glazes»,
Who knows?
